Blackpool Illuminations

The Blackpool Illuminations is an annual lights festival held in Blackpool, Lancashire, England. It was first introduced in 1879 and has been a beloved tradition ever since. Here’s a brief history:

  • 1879: The Illuminations were first switched on with just eight carbon arc lamps along the Promenade, which were described as “artificial sunshine”.
  • 1912: The first display similar to today’s was held to mark the visit of Princess Louise, with around 10,000 light bulbs decorating the promenade.
  • 1925: The lights were extended and included the first illuminated tram.
  • 1932: Animated tableaux were added along the cliffs.
  • 1949: The lights returned after World War II, with actress Anna Neagle pulling the switch.
  • 1950s – Present: The Illuminations have continued to evolve, with new displays each year and famous personalities participating in the annual “Big Switch On”2.

Today, the festival runs for 66 days from late August to early November, and since 2020, the season has been extended to run until after Christmas and New Year celebrations.

It’s a magical experience with over one million bulbs lighting up the 6.2 miles of the Promenade. Have you ever visited the Illuminations?
